On 16 May 1984, the climbing party comprising Michael Scott, Ang Phurba and Jean Afanassieff reached the summit of Chamlang East for the first time, completing a formidable link-up with the central peak along the east ridge before descending – also a first – via the north face. The entire ascent was carried out in alpine style.
